Participants Will Be Able To:
✦ Analyze the rationale for teaching phonemic analysis and its correlation to proficient reading skills. ✦ Explore phonemic analysis tasks. ✦ Review sample baseline assessments. ✦ Discuss needed language targets to communicate during phonemic tasks. ✦ Engage in environmental sounds activity to learn vocabulary. ✦ Share advanced phonemic proficiency routines.
What You'll learn:
Understand phonemic awareness and its role in reading, including its link to phonological awareness, phoneme-grapheme relationships, and research on its impact on reading success.
Use strategies to assess and teach phonemic awareness, including blending, segmenting, and manipulating phonemes with tools like Elkonin blocks, Jamboard, and assessments like PASS and Q-PASS.
Teach key vocabulary for phonemic analysis, such as “first,” “middle,” “last,” and “same/different,” using explicit instruction, visuals, body language, and questioning techniques.
Apply phonemic analysis in the classroom, using chaining, orthographic patterns, and vocabulary integration with tools like Google Slides and Jamboard to support diverse learners.
