Course Description

This course provides a high-level overview of the Science of Reading (SOR), a interdisciplinary research-based approach to reading instruction. Participants will explore the rationale behind the nation-wide shift to Structured Literacy (SL), and impact of new educator certification legislation on professional development requirements. We will explore the key elements of the Structured Literacy classroom and impactful evidence-based instruction. This session is designed to stimulate conversation around the monumental change in reading instruction, and to cultivate a collective wisdom of literacy as a civil right for all children.

What You’ll learn:

The critical role of literacy as a civil rights issue, understanding systemic barriers, educational equity, and the moral imperative to ensure every child’s right to read.
Foundational science of reading concepts and models, including Scarborough’s Reading Rope, the Simple View of Reading, and the core pillars of reading (phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension).
The principles and practices of structured literacy, emphasizing explicit, systematic, diagnostic, and cumulative instruction, especially for students with dyslexia and struggling readers.
Practical strategies and professional development needs for educators to implement evidence-based literacy instruction, shift from balanced literacy to structured phonics, and advocate for policy changes to improve literacy outcomes.
